Throughout history tobacco was often traditionally used in medicinal applications.
Ancient Times - Used in Cuba in burning torches to disinfect the air, also used as toothpaste to whiten teeth, probably mixed with lime or chalk. The use of tobacco toothpaste is still prevalent today in India. 1500 - In Brazil tobacco was used to treat ulcerated abscesses, fistulas, and sores. 1529 - Spanish missionary priest used tobacco to treat headaches, and colds 1560 - Jean Nicot planted his own tobacco plants and distributed them throughout Europe to treat various ailments. 1924 - A salve containing burned tobacco leaves was used to treat ringworm, athlete's foot, ulcers, and wounds. 1926 - Nicotine injections were used in the treatment of Parkinson's. They did show muscular improvement, but it wore off quickly. 1934 - Fernando Ocaranza used tobacco as a pain reliever, and to heal wounds and burns. (5) |
