Bidis - Bidis are tobacco rolled up in a tendu or temburni leaf and stuffed with tobacco. These are smoked much like cigarettes and are mainly found or imported from India or Asia. Some people believe they are more healthy than cigarettes but there is no evidence that supports this hypothesis. As a matter of fact Bidis have a higher concentration of nicotine, tar, and carbon monoxide

Cigarettes contain over 5,000 chemicals when burned some of which are known carcinogens. Cigarettes are highly addictive(33). Picture (39) Cigars - Cigars are tobacco wrapped in tobacco leaf or something that contains tobacco. Traditionally a practice of elderly men.
Picture (40) Dissolvable Tobacco - Dissolvable tobacco is tobacco that melts in your mouth, similar to a Listerine breath strip. It is becoming more popular because people can take them even in places that prohibit smoking. However, they still contain nicotine, an addictive substance(17). Picture (41) Electronic Cigarettes or E-Cigarettes - Electronic Cigarettes are battery powered and deliver nicotine, flavor, and other chemicals into aerosols which are inhaled. E-cigarettes have not been studied thoroughly and only labeled therapeutic e-cigs are regulated by the FDA. The amount of the highly addictive substance, nicotine, in e-cigs is unknown(29). Picture (43) Waterpipe - Waterpipes have been used for almost four centuries in Asia and Africa. They are commonly known as hookahs, the Indian term, but are also known as narghile(East Mediterranean), and shisha or goza(North Africa and/or Egypt). See the diagram to the right for the different parts. Basically moist tobacco is put underneath a hot coal, then the smoker inhales through the mouthpiece and the smoke from the tobacco and coal travels down through the water and is inhaled by the smoker. Waterpipes are widely believed to be more healthy than other forms of tobacco, however this is not the case. They still cause cancer, other diseases, and addiction(34). Picture (42) Kreteks or Clove Cigarettes - Are from Indonesia and contain clove, tobacco, and other substances. Contain a higher dose of nicotine, tar, and carbon monoxide than a regular cigarette. Because their use is not very prevalent kreteks are not very well studied, and the long term effects are not well documented. However, there is evidence of lung damage associated with smoking kreteks(14). Picture (44) Pipe - Smoking tobacco with a pipe involves putting tobacco in the end of the pipe, lighting it and inhaling through the mouthpiece. Picture (45) Chewing Tobacco - This type of tobacco is usually taken orally. Consequently, oral cancer is much more prevalent. Traditionally it was swept up from the leftovers of cigarette factories. Some of the different names for this type of tobacco are chew, dip, snuff, snus, and spit tobacco(16). Picture (46) |
